Can Baking Soda Dissolve Dog Poop? (My Tests & Results)

Can Baking Soda Dissolve Dog Poop?

My second experiment in my series on what dissolves dog poop was to test baking soda. I wanted to see if it had the same effect as vinegar and whether or not it could be used as an effective cleaner for dog poop.

Here’s a quick summary of that experiment and the result; I took a good amount of baking soda and 10-15 drops of peppermint oil and mixed them together. I then applied the mixture onto some dog poop and let it sit for 15 minutes. The baking soda dissolved the dog poop like magic.

Now for the details on my experiments and results, continue reading below.

Pouring Baking Soda On Poop, Poop Stains On Carpet, & On Hard Floor

I did these experiments on three different surfaces, one being dog poop on the grass, the second being poop stains on a carpet, and finally, a hard floor.

Baking Soda On Dog Poop (On Grass)

  • My first experiment was to sprinkle a good amount of baking soda directly onto the dog poop on the grass.
  • I then added 15 drops of peppermint oil and stirred it around with a stick.
  • I applied the mixture to the dog poop on the poop that was sitting on the grass.
  • The result was that the baking soda dissolved the dog poop like magic but not without harming the grass underneath the poop.
  • The grass was burnt and dead after the experiment. This showed that baking soda can be used to dissolve poop, but it should not be used directly on grass.
  • So as not to burn your grass when you want to dissolve dog poop using baking soda, I recommend using Gardening lime or an enzyme dissolver instead.
  • Gardening lime is one of the most common and effective methods for dissolving dog poop without burning the grass.
  • You can use this by sprinkling a good amount of gardening lime onto the dog poop and waiting a few days.
  • The lime will slowly dissolve the poop and break it down faster into the soil.
  • The enzyme dissolver is also another effective way of breaking down dog poop without burning the grass.
  • This dissolver contains a mixture of enzymes that breaks down the solid matter into liquid form, which the soil can then absorb.
  • This works because enzyme dissolves contain zeolite and activated charcoal, which are both very effective at breaking down solid matter.

Baking Soda On Poop Stains On Carpet

My second experiment was applying the same baking soda mixture to a dog poop stain on a carpet.

  • I poured a good amount of baking soda on the stain.
  • I made sure it was enough to cover the entire poop stain.
  • Then I waited 24 hours before vacuuming up the baking soda.
  • The result was that it worked pretty well at dissolving and removing the poop stain from the carpet.
  • The best part is that this method works on all types of poop; diarrhea, solid poop, and even odors.

Baking Soda On Hard Floor

My third experiment was to apply baking soda directly onto hard floor surfaces such as tile, wood, and laminate.

  • I sprinkled a good amount of baking soda on the floor surface around the dog poop.
  • Again, I waited 24 hours before vacuuming up the baking soda.
  • The result was that it worked pretty well at dissolving and removing the poop from the floor.
  • Unlike the other surfaces, they worked the fastest on a hard floor mainly because of the non-porous nature of the surface.

Reasons Baking Soda Dissolves Dog Poop

So why does baking soda work as a dissolver for dog poop?

1. Basking Soda Is An Alkaline

Baking soda is an alkaline substance that reacts with the acidic components in the poop, breaking it down into smaller particles.

These smaller particles are then more easily absorbed by the soil or vacuumed up from surfaces like carpets, hard floors, and grass.

2: Baking Soda Neutralizes Odor

Baking soda is also known for its ability to neutralize odors.

This means that it can help reduce the smell of dog poop and make it easier to clean up after your pet.

The best part is that baking soda is easy on most surfaces and is non-toxic, making it a great choice for cleaning.

3. Baking Soda Contains Sodium Carbonate

Baking soda also contains sodium carbonate, which is a mild abrasive.

This helps break down the solid matter in the poop and makes it easier to dissolve and remove from surfaces like carpets, hard floors, and grass.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, baking soda can be used to dissolve dog poop, but it should not be used directly on grass.

It is best to use an enzyme dissolver or garden lime for this purpose in order to avoid burning the grass and damaging the surface underneath.

Baking soda is also a great choice for other surfaces as it can help break down solid matter and neutralize odors.

Finally, baking soda is non-toxic and easy on most surfaces, making it a popular choice for cleaning up after our furry friends.

Happy cleaning!
